The long-term activation of the stress-response and the overexposure to stress hormones that follow, can disrupt almost all the body's processes.
Prolonged exposure to Combat & Operational Stress can catalyze into mental health disorders and decrease the sense of wellbeing.
The function of the“stress response” is to ensure our survival; but it is meant to be in balance.
Networks within the Central Nervous System have developed to gather and interpret information about the world around us, within us and whether or not we are safe. This workshop, led by Victoria Rojas, will dive into the mechanisms behind stress and how we can work with our bodies and brains to take ourselves from a stressed or anxious state to one that is cool, calm, collected and connected.
Topics include an overview of the Peripheral Nervous System, Autonomic Nervous System, Polyvagal Theory and the “Window of Tolerance” which provides a framework on how to build resilience.
In the second part of the workshop, participants will be guided through a 45-minute yoga practice that incorporates evidence-based techniques proven to efficiently elicit the “relaxation response” and disrupt the “stress response”.
This workshop is open to the public and is beneficial not only to veterans and first responders but also to yoga practitioners, instructors, healthcare workers and anyone interested in this topic.
“Resilience Toolkit: The Anatomy of Stress” is one of 3 workshops being offered by WWYP June-August 2024. Workshops can be taken individually or as a series.
This workshop is eligible for 1.5 hours of continued education through Yoga Alliance.
